![]() Roy has all sorts of unique ideas - especially for establishing environment and ambiance. Not many authors (especially of J- or YA-fic) can do that! ![]() They are quite distinctive and I particularly admire how Roy manages to write characters you aren't supposed to like and makes you spend time with them without feeling like you just want those parts of the book to be over. Roy's offerings as the other kids in the Gauntlet "exam" made me think a little bit of the bad kids in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but with significantly more sophistication. There is a very rich cast of supporting characters in this book. This is a fast-paced, frequently exciting, action-filled book with a good bit of humor that is likely to appeal to a broad range of middle grade readers, and a nice handful of readers of any age who like adventure tales with young protagonists and a bit of magic. ![]()
